Hybrids of Max Leichtlin, Baden- Baden, Germany. 1880s.
AUREA 'IMPERIALIS' A short time afterwards Herr Max Leichtlin, of Baden-Baden, sent out a giant variety of Crocosmia aurea, to which we (Victor and Emile Lemoine) gave the name of Crocosmia aurea 'Imperialis'. The spikes are twice as high as those of the type, and the flowers and the segments twice the size. Its colour is of a magnificent and brilliant orange-yellow. Herr Max Leichtlin is said to of obtained it by selection from several successive generations of seedlings. It is certain, however, that this plant does not come true from seed. GOLDSTRUM Novelty for 1913. My novelties of Montbretia, 'Germania', 'Croesus' and 'Rheingold' having taken well everywhere, I am now in a position to put on the market a variety worthy to be known everywhere. Of vigorous growth 'Goldstrum' branches out in such a manner that often there are about 12 flowering spikes coming out of one stalk and these stand very gracefully over sap green foliage. The colour of the flowers is a golden gamboge yellow of brilliant effect increased by the purity of the shade without any markingin the throat. The almost erect growth, showing each flower to full advantage and the profusion of spikes give such an effect that flowering beds of this novelty are like a mass of flowers without any trace of foliage. Montbretia 'Goldstrum' may therefore be recomended as the best variety in this colour for groups and one of the finest for cut flower. Ref: Wilhelm Pfitzer Catalogue 1913. EUROPA A beautiful hybrid. The flowers crowd together at the apex of the spike, and individually they measure one and a half inches across, the predominent colour deep red, but this is relieved by the yellow anthers. Within the flower at the base is a little pool of pleasant colouring. At the base of each segment is a yellow patch, marked with two rectangular dabs of crimson, and the lower half of the segments shines with a bluish satiny sheen. The whole flower seems full of colour. Ref: 'The Garden', September 3rd. 1904.
(New)- Medium sized, but very shapely flowers on erect stems; the colour is a most striking tone of crimson-scarlet. Ref: Daisy Hill Catalogue No.68, 1906. Ref: Wilhelm Pfitzer's Assortment Book (Trials Book) 1900.
AMERIKA (syn. 'America') Dark orange yellow flowers, with dark red centre. Ref: Daisy Hill Catalogue No.84, 1912.
A very free flower of a wonderful warm orange-red, in which there is a suspicion of an apricot shading. The individual flower is not large, but there is a sunny look about it which is most effective.
