Norfolk Crocosmia Heritage Garden
Planting with Richard Briers

Richard Briers of the BBC series 'The Good Life' and who is presently appearing in The Tempest at Norwich's Theatre Royal, as Prospero, has taken time off to help launch The Norfolk Crocosmia Heritage Garden with children from Hewett Under 5's nursery.

Richard and the schoolchildren planting donated Crocosmia Corms in the Trial Bed at Norwich's Assembly House on the 20th November 2002.

Bradley Simmonds - Project Manager said "I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who donated their corms and our GREENS FORCE TEAM who
created and the garden on the 1st November"

Planting will continue until the gardens formal opening, and nurseries, and
members of the public are already donating corms. Those donated so far have been from David and Colleen Fenwick's National Plant Collection of Crocosmia, The National Trust at Powis Castle, Gardening Which? Magazine from their trial ground and Holden Clough Nursery.

Terry Bane - Project Manager added "Now that the corms are planted we will be nurturing them to encourage flowering for David Fenwick to identify the cultivars on his next visit when we formally open the garden on the 2nd August 2003"

The aim of the garden is to display a piece of Norfolk's Plant Heritage to the public, and show how people can become involved in conserving plants by finding some of the many Norfolk raised Crocosmia (Montbretia) that may still survive in gardens in the county. Hybrids such as those that were developed at Earlham Hall, currently part of the University of East Anglia.

Bill Webster - Chair of Norwich in Bloom said "I was delighted to see the children enjoying themselves planting the corms with Mr. Briers, we printed some
Crocosmia pictures for the children so they could make a Crocosmia Floral display for their classroom wall as a reminder of the day"

Both Mr. Briers and Hewett Under 5's were presented a certificate to thank them for their help.

The Crocosmia Project team are seeking a major sponsor to help fund the
project if your business would like to help please contact Terry Bane on
